Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency (RF) is a non-invasive treatment method for the revitalization and rejuvenation of the skin that has been evolving since its appearance, almost two decades ago.

Mechanism of action

The purpose of RF is to raise tissue temperature between 40º and 43ºC. Upon reaching this temperature, vasodilation in the area is stimulated, contributing to better tissue oxygenation, nutrient supply and formation of new collagen fibers. The electrical current produced by RF is able to reach the deepest tissues, generating energy and strong heat, due to resistance in the dermis and subcutaneous cellular tissue. However, the epidermis remains intact and protected. The procedure is carried out by controlling the temperature with an appropriate thermometer, so as not to generate overheating and damage the surface tissue layer.

When heated, the collagen fibers denature and contract, leading to tissue retraction (lifting effect) and stimulating the formation of new fibers (late neocollagenesis), making them more efficient in supporting the skin. Therefore, the rejuvenating effect occurs through the contraction of collagen fibers induced by RF.

Indications

RF is indicated for facial and body treatments, such as sagging, wrinkles, dark circles, spots, scars, localized fat, cellulite, post-liposuction, postpartum (CARVALHO & SILVA, 2011; NERY et.al., -2014).

Several scientific studies have shown that RF is an effective resource producing effects of reducing facial wrinkles and improving skin texture.

For those who want to avoid cosmetic surgery, RF offers a non-invasive alternative to improve nasolabial lines, lift the eyebrows, firmness in the jaw region, define face angles, without needing recovery time and without the risk of complications.

Benefits

Some additional advantages to the method include its safety, having practically no side effects (except mild redness in some cases) and the patient's ability to retake their routine immediately after the procedure.

With a sunny climate almost all year round in Brazil, especially in the Northeast, RF is an excellent option for those who do not give up being outdoors, going to the beach, as there is no need for more severe care in relation to exposure to the sun. Unlike chemical peels and microneedling, which are also very efficient aesthetic methods, RF sessions do not need to be avoided during the hottest periods of the year.

RF is a gold standard therapeutic method for treating facial and body sagging skin.

RF and associations

RF is also highly recommended as a supporting method after other rejuvenation methods, such as support wires and PDO, filling with hyaluronic acid, intradermotherapy, among others. As these procedures are of limited duration, skin rejuvenation can be maintained longer by associating RF sessions. Several scientific studies already demonstrate that the application of RF does not interfere with materials applied in other procedures. But it is necessary to analyze the time and frequency for RF sessions through an individual assessment.

In the area of plastic surgery, with more invasive procedures, RF sessions can also be performed prior to surgery to improve tissue quality, making the intervention area smaller and, consequently, with better postoperative recovery.

contraindications

RF is contraindicated in heat-sensitive skin, with active rosacea, patients with cardiac pacemakers or electronic devices such as analgesia or insulin pumps, neoplasms (abnormal cell proliferation), over the thyroid gland and orbital region ( eyeball) and deep vein thrombosis (AGNE, -2014; TONEDERM®, 2011; IBRAMED®, 2010 ; NERY et. al., 2014).

Important fact is that, although it cannot be used during pregnancy, RF is a safe and effective method for reducing the circumference and attenuating flaccid skin in the immediate postpartum period.

Radiofrequency acts in the area of integrative aesthetics, promoting an integral improvement in the quality of the skin.
